Colts suffer rare and shock defeat…
Some would say a bad day at the office but not from our point of view. There was only one passing and footballing team out there today and they wore yellow shirts. At no point did our heads drop and at no point did we resort to the long ball “hoof and chase” tactics our opponents employed. Football, such a beautiful game, can be made to look ugly by some teams!!
We started brightly enough keeping possession well and being patient. 4-4-2 was giving us much of the ball in midfield, as it was intended. The Chipstead keeper made two great saves inside the first 7 or 8 minutes. We were then caught from a long ball out of defence and the Chipstead forward turned our last defender and beat the keeper with a toe poke. 1 nil down but only 9 minutes on the clock.
Once again we took the game to Chipstead Stuart and Nathan were lively enough up front with James and Jack A-B pushing down the flanks. Scott and Jack O were doing their bit in the centre too. David at left back was having a superb game passing the ball out of defence with confidence. The only other moment of trouble in the first half for us came from another long ball over the top but Rhys was on hand and won the “dual” with the forward. However we were equally impressed with the 6 Colts boys that had tracked back to cover any other threats.
We were still very much in this game midway through the second half, but 2 late goals on the counter attack made the score line look very flattering indeed.
Apparently there are two divisions between these 2 teams; it was hard to say who was in the top flight on today’s footballing performance. The only thing we need to learn from the Chipstead lads is to be more physical and not allow ourselves to be muscled off the ball. Otherwise just continue as we have done and only good things will be written about Old Coulsdon Colts.
MoM nominations included, Ollie, Scott, Stuart, David and James but the clear winner was Rhys. Well done Keeper !
